Species Range
- Mainly confined to the northern South America, north of the Amazon River. It extends from Amapa, in northeastern Brazil, across the Guyanas and southern Venezuela westward across northern Brazil, reaches southern Colombia, eastern Ecuador and northeastern Peru, extending from here southwards as far as the vicinity of Pucallpa in southern Loreto.
Gender
- Similar appearance in both sexes. The upper part of the head, from the forehead to the nape, is black. The lores are bluish green with streaks of greenish feathering which are very visible underneath the eyes. The upper part of the cheeks may be whitish, turning orange yellow on the lower part, and down to the upper breast. There is a deep orange-colored band which extends behind the neck, often with a few bluish feathers visible on the edges. The mantle, back, wings and rump, as well as the upper tail coverts are green. Most of the breast and abdomen are orange yellow, and this coloring extends to the lower tail coverts. The axillaries are orange and the lower wing coverts green. The carpal edge is greenish yellow, while primaries and primary coverts are violet-blue with green edges. Face of the tail feathers green with light yellow tips, while the undersides are a duller olive yellow color. They have a grayish bare eye stripe. Blackish beak; grayish black feet, dark red iris.
YOUTH
They have a light yellow plumage, spotted on the breast and mid abdomen. Thighs are a deeper yellow color than in adults, with green streaks. Wing plumage seems to have a slight blue wash. Horn-colored beak, with black patches which are more perceptible close to the base of the maxilla; dark chestnut iris.
